Beyond the Basics: A Decorator's Secrets for a Stunning Christmas Tree

Black Friday, and the air was already buzzing with holiday excitement. Kayla & I were at my friend Patti's house, ready to tackle her annual Christmas tree decorating extravaganza. (We decorated a total of 5 trees that day) This video showcases her dining room tree. This year, we were aiming for a vintage, country feel with a mix of reds, greens, and natural elements.

First up, the ribbon. Patti had this gorgeous ribbon from Raz Imports, a bit of an splurge but worth it for the festive touch. We played around with different combinations, finally settling on a double-stranded design with a touch of plaid for some visual interest.

Next, we started adding ornaments. We had a mix of vintage finds, sentimental keepsakes, and some new additions. I loved how we mixed in some unexpected elements like little rolling pins and decorative picks. We experimented with placement, moving ornaments around until we found the perfect balance.

One of my favorite parts was adding the finishing touches. We used some delicate white berries and a few sprigs of greenery to fill in any gaps and create a sense of fullness. Then, we carefully placed some decorative birds on the branches, creating a whimsical and playful touch.

Decorating a Christmas Tree: A Step-by-Step Guide

Decorating the Christmas tree is a beloved holiday tradition. But with so many options and styles, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. This blog post will guide you through the process, inspired by a recent decorating session with a friend.

1. Ribbon:

  • Choose your ribbons: Select 2-3 ribbons that complement your chosen theme. Consider variations in width, texture (velvet, satin, plaid), and color.
  • Create layers: Combine two ribbons together for a richer look.
  • Secure the ribbon: Start at the top of the tree and wind the ribbon around the branches, securing it with clips or by tucking the ends into the branches.
  • Create loops and bows: Add loops and bows for visual interest. Experiment with different sizes and placements.

2. Ornaments:

  • Start with larger ornaments: Begin by placing your larger and more statement-making ornaments.
  • Vary sizes and shapes: Mix and match different sizes and shapes of ornaments for visual appeal.
  • Consider a theme: If you have a specific theme (e.g., vintage, rustic, whimsical), choose ornaments that fit that theme.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: Move ornaments around until you find the perfect placement.

3. Add Accents:

  • Incorporate natural elements: Add pine cones, berries, or other natural elements for a touch of rustic charm.
  • Use picks and sprays: Add decorative picks and sprays to fill in gaps and add dimension.
  • Consider a "topper": Choose a unique topper that complements your tree's overall style.

4. Finishing Touches:

  • Step back and admire: Take a step back and assess your tree from different angles.
  • Adjust as needed: Make any necessary adjustments, such as moving ornaments or adding more decorations.
  • Enjoy your masterpiece!

Tips:

  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to decorating a Christmas tree.
  • Have fun! Decorating your tree should be an enjoyable experience.
